The Judicial Conduct Investigations Office (JCIO) is an independent statutory body which supports the Lord Chancellor and Lord Chief Justice in their joint responsibility for judicial discipline.

Our statutory remit is to deal with complaints of misconduct. This means how a judge has behaved personally, e.g. making a racist remark, inappropriate use of social media, or falling asleep in court.

We cannot accept complaints about a judge’s decision or the way a judge has managed a case.

Please see the ‘What can I complain about?’ page for further information before making a complaint. Complaints which fall outside our remit will be rejected.

Unreasonable behaviour

We expect our staff to treat all those who use our service with dignity and respect and we expect our staff to be afforded the same courtesy. Our staff will terminate any telephone call where the caller shouts or becomes abusive. This includes cultural, racial or religious references and offensive language.  We will not respond to any correspondence which contains such language.
